How to work with kids?

I found the following article in Russian chess magazine "64-chess". In a special section for juniors a strong coach was talking about his teaching program for young children that just start to play chess. I have translated some main parts of this article...

<<...This program is very efficient for children of ages 4 to 10. The program is based on 60 chess lessons which are divided into three steps. On this stage it is very important for the coach to make sure that the kid is having fun and likes playing chess. The main word is PLAYING...

  1. 1-19 lessons

    a) Playing with pawns (without a king)
    b) Playing with pieces against pawns (without a king)
    c) Playing with pieces against pieces and pawns (without a king)
    d) Playing with king against king and pawns

Once again the idea is to PLAY. It is usually match of 4 games (2 with white and 2 with black) from a specific starting positions.
  2. 20-49 lessons

Showing the children(s) the "traditional" chess game. We suggest you to cover the importance of the DEVELOPMENT in the Opening, some simple Endgames, and some basic Tactics. And once again there will always be matches from a specific starting positions. The positions should be connected to the subject covered while the lesson. (1 game with white and 1 game with black.)
  3. 50-60 lessons

Combination that lead to checkmate. Every lesson will end with match of 2 games ( 1 white and 1 black)...

I teach chess with this program for already 10 years. In one single year children go from 0 to aprox. 1500 strength...>>

<<Here is an example of one of the lessons:

Lesson 15: The value of pieces. Exchange. Material advantage.

Bishop and Knight both are equal to 3 pawns (each). When we exchange the B. for the N. we still have the same forces. Rook is equal to 5 pawns and queen is equal 2 rooks or 10 pawns. For example a rook is stronger than a Bishop by 2 pawns (5-3=2), but 2 bishops are already stronger than the rook by 1 pawn (3+3-5=1).
